Parking in Calgary is expensive!

Anyone who has ever visited from out of town and finds out it’s $4.50 an hour to park downtown is stunned, and rightfully so. In fact, in 2014 Calgary was North America’s second most expensive city to park in other than New York.

Yeah, New York.

Parking for a lunch meeting downtown sometimes costs more than the meal, trying to make it on time to class near any of the post secondary institutions without paying half your tuition is impossible, and trying to park near the dome in the winter will cost you a pretty penny.

But now there’s a Calgary based start up here to help!

ParkChamp launched it’s app this year bringing more affordable and convenient parking options to you.

The idea came about when University of Calgary students couldn’t find parking near school.

“It’s really hard to find affordable parking near the University – I was always running late and I could never find parking to make it to class on time,” said ParkChamp Co-founder Alex Chalamova. “Other times, I would overstay and end up getting tickets. I thought, if someone living near the University had space on their driveway during the day, maybe I could ask to rent it some days to park for school”.

With the app parking stall owners can rent them out and users can can find, reserve and pay for parking instantly from their phones.

People with an unused parking stalls can sign up online and list their stall for others to rent. The sign up is free and owners can earn $300 a month on average simply by sharing one parking stall.

For all of those interested in using the app to find parking, the company encourages you to follow them on Facebook or Twitter @ParkChampApp for announcements.
