Metal Galaxy, a Calgary-based store specializing in card games, miniatures, and board games, is moving from its four-year home on Haddon Road to a new premises on Macleod Trail, which is slated to open in early January 2016.
Having outgrown its original space, Metal Galaxy will locate to a larger venue with an on-site eatery, yet remain a mecca for those interested in games.
The concept behind the new outpost and setup has been brewing for a few years, says owner Pascal Espinosa. “The old location seemed to have grown as much as it could in its current incarnation. We feel that Calgary needs a space like the one we are creating.”
Part traditional hobby/gaming store, part bistro and board game café, the new Metal Galaxy will feature over 300 board games for sale and a growing board game library for patrons to play at their leisure.
Metal Galaxy will continue to carry a range of “gateway” games, such as Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride, as well as strategy, family and adventure type games. The hobby section will feature over 300,000 cards, including Magic The Gathering, Pokemon, and Yugioh, as well as miniatures and 5,000-plus dice for the Dicemasters game line.
People of all ages and skill levels will be welcome at the soon-to-open Metal Galaxy Social Games & Bistro, says Espinosa.
“At the new location we intend to bring families back together to socialize and play games, offer a great venue for date night, as well as offer birthday parties, and weekly events that cater to everyone,” Espinosa says.
Food wise, the menu, which was created jointly by Espinosa and his fiancee and “tweaked” by French Chef Thierry Meret from Cuisine et Chateau, will feature gourmet paninis, flatbreads, salads and desserts. “We are planning on being licensed within a few months of opening,” Espinosa says.
