With the start of another school year quickly approaching, the University of Calgary will hold the 19th annual Orientation Week, or O Week, from September 1 to 4, 2015. All new students will have this fantastic opportunity, whether you are from Calgary or not, to get to know the campus and everything it has to offer.
This four-day event is full of fun activities and is a great way to learn more about your faculty, meet your peers, and to make the most of your University experience.
Induction and the Presidents’ BBQ
Tuesday, September 1
O Week kicks off with an Induction ceremony, with speeches from a variety of honoured speakers including Dr. Elizabeth Cannon, our university president. This will be followed by a high energy pep rally.
After the pep rally, head over to the outside of the Olympic Oval for the Presidents’ BBQ where you will be served a delicious lunch by members of our senior administration. There will also be a Much Video Dance Party where you will surely meet lots of great new people.
Faculty Orientation and Core Sessions
Wednesday, September 2
The second day is a great time to meet your fellow peers within your faculty. Your faculty members and administration will also be there to provide you with information regarding the services and resources they offer to help you succeed during your time at U of C.
Take a guided tour of the university lead by expert Orientation Leaders who will share interesting facts, helpful tips, directions to important resources on campus, and provide assistance with navigating to each of your classes.
Also, check out Sexxxy, a fantastic play from the School of Creative and Performing Arts, which offers insight into the various issues you may face during your time in university in a hilarious and thoughtful way.
Thursday, September 3
Day 3 of O Week provides you with a chance to choose sessions based on what you are interested in or want to learn more about.
Some of the available sessions include Keys for Success, which will provide you with study tips and programs offered at U of C to help have the most successful university career. There will also be a session on Internationalizing Your Degree, which will provide helpful insight to all of the programs offered at U of C that allow you to study abroad.
In addition to these, and several others, sessions for mature and transfer students will also be available.
Tailgate and KICKOFF
Friday, September 4
The last day of Orientation Week is definitely packed with lots of great events that will surely have you excited to start your year at U of C.
One of these great events includes KICKOFF, an annual tradition at the University of Calgary, which marks the start of the Dinos football season. This will take place at McMahon Stadium where you will be able to cheer on the Dinos as they take on the UBC Thunderbirds.
The Tailgate and free BBQ starts at 3:30 p.m., but be sure to come early, as the first 2000 people will receive a tasty Spolumbo sausage or veggie burger.
In addition to the free BBQ, make sure to visit the Students’ Union Fun Zone, which will feature bouncy boxing, sumo wrestling, face painting, and more. The football game begins at 5:30pm and is free for students, so bring your friends, wear red, and show your Dinos pride!
