A Calgary cafe is calling on the community for financial help after a “devastating fire” last week.

On Feb. 12, fire crews were called to Nile Cafe at 1131 17th Ave. SW, reporting a fire in the drop-down ceiling.

While no one was on site and no injuries were reported, the Nile Cafe said the fire had caused “serious damage” in a GoFundMe aimed at raising money to help with its recovery.

“We invested years of hard work, savings, and love into building it. In just minutes, everything changed,” it said.

While the owners are still waiting for the official reports to know the full extent of the loss, they added that it had already been life-changing for the family.

The fire didn’t only damage walls and equipment — it took security, stability, and something we poured our hearts into.”

In a Facebook post, the 17th Avenue spot added that the money raised would help support the family that owned the business, as it was their main source of income. While the fire is being investigated, they have neither access to the cafe nor any income from it.

The fundraiser is aiming to collect $2,800 to help with the first steps of the recovery process, and has currently raised $1,900.
