I, Daniel Blake

Veteran British filmmaker Ken Loach returns with a scathing critique of Britain’s welfare state. Set in Newcastle, the film follows a handyman navigating the seemingly endless bureaucracy of the UK’s benefits system after a heart attack leaves him out of work. The unapologetically grim drama won last year’s coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and its message couldn’t be any timelier. Featuring a sensational script from Paul Laverty and a riveting performance from lead star Dave Johns, I, Daniel Blake makes for essential viewing.

The Wall

No, it’s not the story of Donald Trump’s planned wall or a remake of the seminal Pink Floyd film. Instead, WWE veteran Jon Cena and Nocturnal Animals (for which he won a Golden Globe Award) star Aaron Taylor-Johnson play American soldiers pinned down by an Iraqi sniper, with nothing but a crumbling wall between them. The gritty war thriller was directed by Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity) and produced by Amazon Studios with a script from first-time screenwriter Dwain Worrell.

Snatched

Goldie Hawn (her first on-screen role in 15 years) teams up with Amy Schumer for a brand new action comedy. The pair play a mother and daughter who take an exotic vacation that goes horribly, and hopefully hilariously, awry. Snatched was directed by Jonathan Levine, whose previous credits include Warm Bodies and 50/50. Co-writer Katie Dippold (Ghostbusters, Spy, The Heat) claims the movie was inspired by her own relationship with her mom. Watch for a strong ensemble cast including scene-stealers Joan Cusack, Christopher Meloni, Ike Barinholtz, and Wanda Sykes.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

The medieval legend of Excalibur gets a stylish makeover in Guy Ritchie’s latest epic fantasy adventure. Sons of Anarchy heartthrob Charlie Hunnam tackles the iconic role of Arthur, a streetwise revolutionary who discovers his true destiny after pulling the mythical sword from the stone. Jude Law plays his villainous uncle Vortigern with Spanish actress Astrid Bergès-Frisbey providing the love interest. The film also features Eric Bana, Game of Thrones‘ Aidan Gillen, and Djimon Hounsou. Dazzling visuals, including super-sized war elephants, promise loads of spectacle but let’s hope there is some substance underneath all the slo-mo action sequences.

Alien: Covenant

Director Ridley Scott continues exhaustively mining one of 20th Century Fox’s most beloved properties with yet another Alien movie. Never mind the fact that the 79-year old claims he has at least six more Alien flicks quietly gestating and is apparently open to de-aging Sigourney Weaver in future films. Covenant picks up after the events of 2012’s critically mixed but financially successful sci-fi/horror thriller Prometheus. A colony ship crew lands on a remote planet thinking they’ve stumbled into paradise but it turns out they’re actually on a treacherous world full of nasty creatures. The dynamic cast includes Katherine Waterston, Michael Fassbender, Billy Crudup, plus (oddly enough) James Franco and Danny McBride. This latest venture may seem familiar but at least they’re finally giving fans what they really want this time: maximum xenomorph carnage!

Everything, Everything

Nicola Yoon’s 2015 young-adult novel’s adaptation hits theatres this month. Shot mainly in Vancouver, this romantic drama chronicles the life of a teen girl (Amandla Stenberg) unable to leave her house because of an immunodeficiency, who falls for the boy (Jurassic World’s Nick Robinson) next door. You might need a Nicholas Sparks-sized box of tissues by the closing credits. As a side, if the soundtrack doesn’t feature Underworld’s Cowgirl it’s a wasted opportunity! #90sjoke

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Filed in the ‘Johnny Depp really needs a paycheque’ department, Dead Men Tell No Tales is the fifth instalment in Disney’s mega-franchise that is of course based on a popular theme park ride. Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) searches for the trident of Poseidon while being pursued by former nemesis Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem). The film also welcomes back Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, who were notably absent from the fourth flick. Directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg’s (Kon-Tiki) insistence that this new one’s tone will be more reflective of the 2003 original could be the movie’s redeeming buried treasure.

Baywatch

The hit 90s TV drama that featured beaches and babes gets a modern comedic reboot starring Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, and Priyanka Chopra. A devoted lifeguard, named Mitch Buchannon (Johnson), butts heads with a cocky new recruit (Efron) but the two put their differences aside to bring down a criminal mastermind’s (Chopra) drug trafficking operation. Co-written by sketch comedy masters Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, the movie version has plenty of promise but the big question still remains: will we get a cameo from The Hoff?
