New Calgary Flames arena has more exciting updates as building is really starting to take shape

It’s taken a bit of time, but the Calgary Flames’ soon-to-be-home, Scotia Place, is really starting to look like an arena.

That is all credit towards the construction crews who have been working on this project since July 2024. The entire building is now well above ground, and there were even steps being taken to begin putting in the roof last week.

Though the building won’t be ready until the 2027-28 NHL season, it’s already worth driving past to take a look at if you haven’t had the opportunity.

On Tuesday morning, Scotia Place released even more exciting updates for those who have been tracking its progress.

The month of April is expected to see major structural steel progress continue, as there are now two roof trusses in place in the southwest corner. Meanwhile, exterior framing and drywall are continuing along the south side of the building, moving west above what will be the indoor plaza and restaurants.

Concrete is also continuing to be poured, which includes the loading dock and the exterior parkade walls.

This arena is expected to seat roughly 18,400 once complete. It will feature plenty of amenities, including four restaurants, an open-air patio, a Flames team store, and a 1,000-person capacity community arena. The community arena will be able to be booked at certain times throughout the year.

This arena is already paying dividends for the city of Calgary, which will serve as a host along with Edmonton and Prague for the 2028 World Cup of Hockey. The building is also a large part of what has Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas, as well as Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, considering putting a bid forward for the 2038 Winter Olympics.
