CalgaryNEXT: New megaproject could see new Calgary arena, stadium and more

Calgary could be getting a new hockey arena, football stadium and amateur sports field house as part of a transformative megaproject, according to rumours spreading from a letter Ken King, President & CEO of Calgary Sports & Entertainment Corporation, sent to Flames season ticket holders.

The letter read:

It is a great time to be a sports fan and live in this wonderful and vibrant city of Calgary. We would like to share a proposal for a project that will make all Calgarians and Albertans proud.

This has the potential to be one of Calgary’s most transformative projects at a vital time in our city’s history.

This will be our first public discussion on this project and it is important that you be among the first to know.

On August 18, we will be hosting an information session to present the high level scope of the project including a preview of CalgaryNEXT.

This is not a formal launch of the project, but it is an opportunity for us to share what has been done to date and introduce our vision for the future.

It seems the Flames are taking a page out of the Edmonton Oilers’ book on transforming the city and area around the arena.

The property will be located near the current Greyhound Station, west of downtown, and take up several blocks, according to the Calgary Herald. No official plans have been announced as of yet. We will provide updates as they come.
