Nemec wants to prove Devils made a mistake in Calgary Flames trade
Calgary Flames defenceman Simon Nemec is as motivated as ever heading into the 2026-27 season.
Though the 22-year-old never officially requested a trade from the New Jersey Devils, he admitted that he was very happy to have it go through. Joining a much less experienced blue line in Calgary, Nemec is excited to play a bigger role with his new team.
“I think I couldn’t play my best hockey,” Nemec told The Hockey News’ David Alter last week at the NHL/NHLPA European Media Tour. “I wasn’t given the opportunity that I want, and at the end of the day, they decided it’s best for me and for them to get traded. And I’m happy with that.”
Nemec struggled to thrive with the Devils during his four seasons with the organization. Even during the 2025-26 campaign — which saw him register a career-high 26 points — he was healthy scratched on two occasions. That won’t be the case with the Flames.
Not only did the Flames pay a premium to acquire the 2022 second-overall pick, but they also signed him to a five-year, $36.25-million extension. It’s clear they believe he has a lot of untapped potential and are willing to give him a big opportunity. He’s not only expected to log big minutes at even strength, but is likely to play on their top power-play unit.
“I just want to prove to everyone that New Jersey wasn’t right,” Nemec said.
And despite heading into a new dressing room, there is already a feeling of comfort for Nemec.
Not only was Devils teammate Maxim Tsyplakov included in the deal with Nemec, but he also got to know Martin Pospisil while playing with him for Slovakia at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Having that comfort level with some teammates should help Nemec in a big way when it comes to settling in. Though there could still be some growing pains going forward with the young blueliner, he now headlines what is a promising young and upcoming group in Calgary, and seems more eager than ever to prove that he is capable of being a top-pairing option.
