Naked yoga is getting hot in Calgary

Doing yoga in the buff might be the next big trend to hit Calgary. Naked Yoga YYC offers a safe space to be able to do your best downward dog while completely nude.

It all started back in 2014 when Katherine Medina wanted to do something specifically for women to boost their self-esteem and remove obstacles, fears, and restrictions.

“How many sun salutations have you done, stopped to re-adjust your clothes, looked around the room, wondered about the clothes others were wearing. Without clothes you remove those distractions and focus on yourself – for an hour – finally,” Medina told Calgary Buzz.

The class has since shifted focus to include co-ed yoga nudists, and she finds herself having to take on up to 30 students per class because of the overwhelming demand.

Medina says her participants love it – almost all of them end up coming back for more.

This Valentine’s Day, she’s even offering special couple’s yoga sessions.

It’s a non-sexual class where I will guide the couples through some postures and some where they balance on and against each other. It’s a great way to reconnect, be vulnerable together and depend on each other,” she said.

Medina said her classes haven’t been without backlash, though. She said she thinks people fear the unknown.

“This is just yoga without clothes. It’s just yoga. It’s been practiced without clothes in India for hundreds of years. I just feel bad for those that can’t say anything nice. They are the ones that need yoga in their lives.”

Medina said the best part about about doing yoga naked is the feeling of power you get from it all.

Classes range from $10 to $20 and passes are available. She mentions, too, that yoga isn’t the only nude event she hosts. Look out for a nude landscape painting class coming to Calgary soon.
