9 concerts to check out as Calgary's Music Mile launches

Calgary’s Music Mile launches Friday night with a spectacular slew of performances – in fact, you’ll have nine options to choose from.

The stretch of retail and concert venues along 9th Avenue SE stretches from Blue Can in Inglewood down to Studio Bell in East Village. The city hopes it will become a popular tourist attraction and will offer a diverse range of musical performances from different artists and genres year-round.

Music Mile is launching in spectacular style, too, with nine musical performances at different venues. Check them out below:

Music Mile 12 Hour Music Marathon

Celebrate the launch of Music Mile with a bang. Twelve musicians will be playing at Gravity Espresso and Wine Bar for 12 hours straight, from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Get a chance to meet local musicians and get a taste of Calgary’s diverse music scene.

One Night Stand

With a great variety of shows on 10 stages, you can get a solid taste of Music Mile with this one venue. As the event listing says, it’s a great way to start a beautiful affair with Music Mile.

Christian Hudson, Moreno and the Fly, and The Withdrawals

Vagabond Calgary is the newest live music venue to become part of Music Mile. It’s just a short walk through the underpass south of the new National Music Centre towards the Stampede.

Bob McFarlane at Bite on Music Mile

Start the Music Mile with an affordable dinner and soft jazz.

Heebee Jeebees on Ironwood Stage

The Heebee Jeebees will be performing a capella numbers at the Ironwood entrance. This Calgary-based comic a cappella group have performed about a gazillion gigs for fans, families, corporations and charities since 1993. They are always a hit at local and international events, conferences, festivals, competitions, parties, and exhibitions.

Annie Da Silva at Charbar

Date night on Music Mile? How about starting with dinner and sultry acoustic music by Annie Da Silva at charbar. Be sure to book your reservation for the 2nd floor.

Little Concerts presents The Wardens

Welcome to Fort Calgary on the Music Mile. Doors and cash bar open at 7:00pm; performance starts at 7:30pm. Tickets: $15 advance; $20 door. Hazel Grey is the opening act.

Steve Pineo’s Elvis Birthday Show at Ironwood Stage

Steve Pineo’s Elvis Birthday Show, featuring an ensemble of some of the finest Calgary musicians.

Joe Semple Quartet at Lolita’s Lounge

Joe Semple is an Edmonton based Clarinetist who plays a mix of hard swinging standards and groovy, bopish, and absolutely adventurous originals. He’s returning to his home town of Calgary to take the stage with his intrepid band of Northern Albertan riff-raff featuring Brett Hansen on Guitar, Andreas Wegner on Bass, and Murray Smith on the Drums.
