It’s definitely beginning to feel colder outside, but that also means one of Calgary’s most adorable events is back.

The KingĀ Penguin WalkĀ returned to the Calgary Zoo on Friday, January 15. Go and see the daily 10 am walk of the king penguin colony, as they stretch their legs and waddle their way through the zoo.

The Penguin Walk is an extremely rare chance to see this fun animals up-close.

“We are the only zoo in Canada that does a penguin walk.Ā  In the wild, king penguins walk large distances to find food.Ā  Under human care, we give our king penguins the choice to walk daily for both exercise and a wonderful enrichment opportunity to explore the world outside their habitat,” the Calgary Zoo told Daily Hive in an email interview.

This experience is a chance for visitors to experience the penguins in a new way, and also for the penguins to exercise their brains and bodies during the winter months.

“The king penguin colony looks forward to it as part of their morning routine,” said the zoo.

During the walk, spectators will have the opportunity so see as many as 13 penguins, including the first walk of Boudicca, who hatched back in July 2020.

Even though the penguins look forward to their morning stroll, it’s still a free-choice activity.

“We have had to cancel several walks this year due to it being too warm or too windy for the penguins to safely walk,” said the zoo.

“On the days we have held the penguin walk, visitors of all ages have delighted in seeing these beautiful animals close up,” they added.

This will be the 9th year for the Penguin Walk, and things will look a little different than previous years because of COVID restrictions.

“Timed tickets must be purchased in advance of the zoo visit and there are a very limited number of tickets to help us ensure physical distancing.Ā  Visitors are placed at poles along the penguin walk route where they must remain for the duration of the event,” the Calgary Zoo told us.

The Penguin Walk will run daily until March, weather permitting. You can find details on tickets and updates on the animals on the Calgary Zoo’s website.
