Monahan sent heartwarming text to Kerins after Calgary Flames debut

Sean Monahan may no longer be part of the Calgary Flames, but it’s clear he still keeps tabs on his former team.

Monahan, who is having an impressive season for the Columbus Blue Jackets, spent the first nine years of his career with the Flames. Despite being traded following the 2021-22 campaign, he continues to be a fan favourite in Calgary.

That fandom won’t be dying down anytime soon, as the Flames tweeted out a text that Monahan sent to Rory Kerins, who had two assists in his NHL debut last night in what ended up being a 5-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks.

“Easy league. Proud of you,” Monahan said to the 22-year-old. Kerins responded back a short time later, saying, “Thanks Mony, appreciate it my guy.”

Monahan has been going through some extremely tough times as of late, as he lost his best friend and another former Flame, Johnny Gaudreau, just before the 2024-25 season got underway. It says a lot about him that despite everything he’s going through, he still took some time to congratulate Kerins on his big achievement.

As for Kerins, he will remain in the Flames lineup tonight versus the St. Louis Blues. While another multipoint outing may be too much to ask, seeing him have the success he did last night doesn’t come as a major surprise. Prior to his call up, he was leading the AHL in goals with 21 through just 34 games.

Kerins could end up getting an extended look with the Flames, as he’s filling in for Connor Zary who is out for an unspecified amount of time with a knee injury.
