Amidst the ongoing downturn, there is still a trickle of major tower construction activity in downtown Calgary, in the form of a new luxury hotel.

Construction is well underway on The Dorian at 525 5th Avenue SW — a 27-storey hotel property with 307 guestrooms, including 133 high-end Marriott Autograph rooms within the upper floors and 174 Marriott Courtyard rooms within the lower floors.

An impressive amenity will be located on the 27th floor, which will be used as a restaurant and lounge with an expansive south-facing outdoor patio. Other amenities include a main floor day bar and a second level bistro.

The $100-million building, replacing a ground-level parking lot, will also be connected to the +15 skywalk network off 5th Avenue SW.

“Building a new hotel at a time when many are screaming bust might not seem apropos, but we’re looking to the future because we see real opportunity in tourism that will translate into billions of dollars in economic activity for this city,” said Andrew Boblin, senior vice-president of PBA Land & Development, in a statement.

“This hotel will raise the architectural calibre of Calgary’s skyline but it will also be a symbol of optimism; projects and deals and business is still getting done in Calgary. This city has a long history of resilience. And we’re building on that.”

Despite the economic conditions, there is still overseas travel growth to Calgary. By the end of 2019, travel from the US will grow by 3.2%, local leisure travel will be up by 1.7%, and domestic business travel will see a slight rebound of 2.2%.

When open in Spring 2022, The Dorian will reportedly provide employment for 150 people.
