Man dead following collision with off-duty CPS officer: ASIRT

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating an early-morning collision that left one man dead and another in hospital.

According to a release from ASIRT, the injured man is a Calgary Police Service officer who had been off-duty at the time of the incident, which prompted the ASIRT investigation.

The off-duty officer had been driving a truck northbound on Metis Trail when he was struck by an SUV heading west on Country Hills Boulevard.

The SUV had previously had an interaction with a marked police vehicle, according to the release, though ASIRT is still determining the details of that interaction.

The collision occurred around 3:30 am at the intersection of Metis Trail and Country Hills Boulevard, resulting in the driver of the SUV being ejected from his vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It is believed the officer had no knowledge of the interaction between the patrol vehicle and the truck, prior to being struck,” the release states. The officer had been driving home following a night shift.

ASIRT believes that the intersection will be closed for the majority of the day and urges commuters to use alternative routes.
