The majority of Alberta business owners seem to be pessimistic about the economy, but remain optimistic about their future, according to the ATB Business Beat survey.

The quarterly survey collects data from random Alberta small and mid-sized enterprises (SME) to gain insights on the challenges and opportunities they face.

Findings reflect that SMEs are concerned about the economy, with only 32% believing it will get better or stay the same in six months. On the upside, approximately many believe that their company will either stay the same (41%) or be better (21%).

Construction SMEs are the most optimistic about the future of their businesses, with 30% believing that their business will be better.

The survey also looked at SME’s borrowing needs, finding that approximately half (47%) of Alberta Business owners have borrowed money over the last three years.
