Made by Marcus employee tests positive for coronavirus

Jul 27 2020, 10:12 pm

Popular local ice cream purveyor Made by Marcus has announced one of its employees has tested positive for COVID-19.

The staff member worked at the 17th Avenue location. As soon as the company received word on Wednesday, July 22, they shut down the store.

All close contacts of the affected individual were asked to self-isolate for 14 days from the employee’s last shift on July 17, and they’ve also received testing.

The 121-1013 17 Avenue shop is expected to be closed for at least a week. Made by Marcus’ other Calgary locations remain open and unaffected by this case.

To our valued customers, friends and community,   I have unfortunate news that we have had a positive COVID-19 case at our 17th Ave location. We want to be fully transparent regarding this situation and what we are doing to keep our employees and customers safe. Last Wednesday, July 22, we received information that one of our employees from our 17th Ave shop tested positive and immediately closed down that location. All of the close contacts of that person were asked to self-isolate for 14 days from the infected person’s last shift (July 17th) as per AHS guidelines, and have received testing. So far, all of these staff have been tested and we have received more than half of the test results back, all of which have been negative. We are currently waiting for AHS to do contact tracing and to provide further information on how to proceed. We expect that 17th Ave will continue to be temporarily closed for at least the following week and we will reopen only when it’s 100% safe to do so. Hillhurst and Whyte Ave locations have remained open since they have had no contact to the individual, but are on heightened awareness and procedures.    We are confident that the current procedures in the store would prevent any direct customer-to-employee contact. All locations have plexiglass installed, employees are wearing masks and gloves at all times, there is no sampling, the washrooms are closed to the public and we only offer cashless payments. We also have increased sanitization protocols as we sanitize the shops at the top of every hour.   The reality is that this is going to happen and thankfully we have the procedures in place to deal with this. I am so grateful to have such a supportive team to manage this difficult situation and our loyal customers who have been so understanding during this time. Our connection to our customers is the reason that we do this, we LOVE spreading the joy of ice cream! That said, the health and safety of both our staff and customers will always take precedence over sales. (continued in comments)…
