A new store is bringing its successful market-inspired take on grocery shopping to Calgary. Loblaws CityMarket is set to open up in Northwest Calgary on Friday, January 29.
Loblaw, the Ontario-based grocery giant, has launched three CityMarket locations to-date, all in British Columbia. The concept is to provide customers with “the convenience of a full-service grocery store in a distinctive food market style layout,” melding the company’s range of products, from the black label artisanal-style President’s Choice items to the budget-conscious “No Name” line. Calgarians may already be familiar with those products from shopping at Loblaw’s Real Canadian Superstore and No Frills locations.
Additionally, the 43,000-square-foot Calgary CityMarket at Sage Hill Plaza boasts a large “wall of cheese,” an in-house bakery and patisserie, and a deli and to-go section that features the From Our Chefs line of grab-and-go meal options. As part of their staff, CityMarket will also have a full-time registered dietitian who can provide one-on-one consultations, store tours, shopping assistance and recipes.
“When customers walk through our doors they’re going to enjoy a grocery shopping experience that’s unlike anything else in the province,” says Veronika Buckler, store owner. “My team can’t wait to share their knowledge with our customers and help them shop our amazing selection of fresh foods.”
Opening weekend celebrations will include food sampling, an opera-singing chef, cooking demonstrations, an eight-foot sushi dragon and a caricature artist. The first 100 adult customers to arrive at the store on opening day will receive special giveaways.
While this is the first CityMarket in Alberta, plans are already underway for an Edmonton location, as well as expanding within Calgary and elsewhere in the province.
