Here's the latest update on Calgary Flames forward Jonathan Huberdeau

It’s been quite some time since Calgary Flames fans have seen Jonathan Huberdeau on the ice.

The 33-year-old underwent hip resurfacing surgery last March, which put an early end to his 2025-26 season.

While there was some hope that he may have been able to return for the start of the 2026-27 season, it became apparent around September that that wouldn’t be the case. Things got even less clear after Flames General Manager Craig Conroy revealed that Huberdeau had suffered a setback around that same time.

Though it’s been a lengthy process, Huberdeau is making positive progress towards a return. He’s been skating regularly, albeit in a non-contact jersey. That jersey may soon change, as QR 770’s Pat Steinberg provided somewhat of a timeline as to when a return may happen.

“He’s still working his way back, but he’s going to be back in the next number of weeks,” Steinberg said in an appearance on Barn Burner.

While that isn’t a definitive timeline by any means, it does suggest that we could wind up seeing Huberdeau return to the lineup before the Christmas break.

Though Huberdeau has taken a lot of flak during his time in Calgary, he would still be helpful to this lineup, assuming he can contribute offensively at a similar pace to what he did during the 2024-25 season.

That 2024-25 campaign saw Huberdeau finish second amongst all Flames skaters with 28 goals and 62 points.

While it remains to be seen how effective he can be after such a major surgery, the Flames need all the help they can get offensively. Despite turning things around as of late with a 7-3-0 record in their last 10 games, they sit 29th in the NHL in scoring with an average of just 2.53 goals per game.
