JUNOfest Calgary: 10 jazz and blues events to check out

Over 100 local and national musicians will be playing at venues around Calgary for JUNOfest this weekend. There are $30 wristbands available to get access into all JUNOfest venues over both nights, Friday and Saturday (subject to venue capacity), or you can buy tickets to individual shows.

To make things a bit easier for you, we’ve complied a list of ten jazz and blues events to check out.

Alex Pangman

  • Who: Based in Toronto, Ontario, but originally from Mississauga, Alex is a jazz singer. She will be singing along side Tara Kannangara, and Jaclyn Guillou in a ladies of the JUNOs performance, and is a 2016 JUNO Award nominee for vocal jazz album of the year.
  • Where: Lolita’s Lounge – 1413 9th Avenue SE
  • When: Saturday April 2 at 9:30
  • Cost: $25

Blackburn

  • Who: The Blackburn Brothers live in Toronto and are 2016 JUNO Award nominees for blues album of the year. Duane, Cory, Brooke and Robert all have musically running through their veins thanks to their R&B pioneer father Bobby Dean.
  • Where: The Blues Can – 1429 9th Avenue SE
  • When: Saturday, April 2. Show starts at 8 p.m. Blackburn on at midnight.
  • Cost: $15

David Gogo

  • Who: A blues guitarist, singer-songwriter and bandleader originally from Nanaimo, British Columbia. David is a 2016 JUNO Award nominee for blues album of the year. This the his fifth Juno nod of his career.
  • Where: The Blues Can – 1429 9th Avenue SE
  • When: Saturday, April 2. Show starts at 8 p.m. David on at 10 p.m.
  • Cost: $15

Harrison Kennedy

  • Who: Born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, Harrison pulls from styles as varied as funk, soul, R&B, folk, rock, and gospel. In 2008, he was a JUNO Award nominee for best blues recording.
  • Where: The Blues Can – 1429 9th Avenue SE
  • When: Saturday, April 2. Show starts at 8 p.m. Harrison on at 11 p.m.
  • Cost: $15

Jaclyn Guillou

  • Who: 2016 JUNO nominee for vocal jazz album of the year, Jaclyn is from North Delta, British Columbia. She now lives in Vancouver, and has toured throughout Europe, Canada and the United States.
  • Where: Lolita’s Lounge – 1413 9th Avenue SE
  • When: Saturday April 2 at 9:30 p.m.
  • Cost: $25

Kirby Sewell Band

  • Who: An electrifying Canadian Blues Rock Band, the 5-piece band won the Maple Blues Award for new artist of the year in 2015. The group is from our very own, Calgary, Alberta.
  • Where: #1 Legion – 116 7 Avenue SE
  • When: Saturday April 2 at 9 p.m. Kirby on at 10:30 p.m. downstairs
  • Cost: $15

Mitch Belot

  • Who: Mitch’s soulful voice and classic blues riffs make you think he’s transported from the 1930’s. Born and raised in Calgary, Mitch has performed throughout Canada.
  • Where: The Blues Can – 1429 9th Ave SE
  • When: Friday April 1 at 8 p.m. Mitch on at midnight.
  • Cost: $15

Tara Kannangara

  • Who: Tara labels herself as a Groove-Based Indie Jazz artist. From Chilliwack, BC, she is aa 2016 Juno Award nominee for vocal jazz album of the year.
  • Where: Lolita’s Lounge – 1413 9th Avenue SE
  • When: Saturday April 2 at 9:30
  • Cost: $25

The Heirlooms

  • Who: Formed in early 2015, the group is an up-and-coming, five piece ensemble has a rock n roll and blues sound. Originally formed in High River, Alberta, the group is now based out of Calgary.
  • Where: Night Owl – upstairs – 213 – 10th Avenue SW
  • When: Friday April 1 at 8 p.m. Heirlooms on at midnight.
  • Cost: $15

The 6L6’s

  • Who: Influenced by the Delta Blues genra of the 20’s and 30’s combined with grunge of the 90’s. Mike, Kent and Tommy love to showcase the evolution of the blues.
  • Where: The Blues Can – 1429 9th Ave SE
  • When: Friday April 1 at 8 p.m. 6L6’s on at 10 p.m.
