Calgarians voting for the Grey Wolf in Zoo's 'Greatest Animal contest'

The Calgary Zoo’s Canada’s Greatest Animal contest has been going on since March, and preliminary numbers show the beaver might be bumped out of top spot.

The beaver is currently Canada’s national animal and has been since 1975 but for Canada’s 150th birthday the Calgary Zoo has decided to run a contest of its own to see if time for change has come.

“Why should the Beaver bask in all the glory? We have a whole host of animals as charming and as dentally endowed as the Beaver,” a statement on the Zoo’s voting page exclaims.

The contenders

There’s the intrepid Grizzly, the upwardly mobile Mountain Goat, the graceful Whooping Crane, the dashing Grey Wolf, the high plains drifting Bison, the wise Great Grey Owl, and finally, our incumbent—the Beaver.

The full list of candidates is:

  • Plains bison.
  • Grizzly bear.
  • Whooping crane.
  • Grey wolf.
  • Great grey owl.
  • Rocky Mountain goat.
  • Beaver.

As it sits right now, the grey wolf has a lead over the beaver, followed closely by the goat and the bear.
