Grate & Barrel moving to 17th Ave SW (with a name change)

Did you get a chance to check out the grilled cheese sandwiches and pie milkshakes from Grate & Barrel before they packed up their Mission shop last fall?

It shouldn’t be too long before Grate & Barrel re-appears at their new 17th Ave SW digs (in what was previously Nellie’s Cosmic Cafe) but you’ll want to keep an eye out for a bit of a name change. If you thought their name sounded like a U.S. based chain that sells high-end home decor and kitchenware, well, so did that store.

Owner Mhairi O’Donnell has been pretty tight-lipped about what’s going on with The Sandwich Shop Somewhat Formerly Known as Grate & Barrel (there’s some confusion and frustration from grilled cheese-loving customers on the restaurant’s Facebook page). No hints so far as to the name, or an opening date.

It’s been a bit of a location shuffle around town for restaurants in the last few months. Let’s see if we can break it down: Grate & Barrel started out in the old Mission Diner spot, but now it’s moving into what had been Nellie’s Cosmic Café. And O’Donnell was also behind The Loop, which has since turned over into PiPs, a board game café (kicking off a new trend). Phew. Got all that?

In the meantime, hang on for news of Grate & Barrel’s re-opening and re-naming, so you can get your hands on their sandwiches named for Calgarian rockers, soup, and milkshakes. Their current hashtag #wecouldmilkshakethat is certainly brimming with delicious potential.
