4th Street’s Mission Diner has a new look, and whole new, well, mission: Grilled Cheese. Grate & Barrel launched last month, and so far it has been wooing customers with their melty, cheeky goodness.
Under the same ownership, Grate & Barrel is mastering the grilled cheese with the same humble deliciousness breakfast fans found at Mission Diner. Here the menu gets as basic as a plain Wonder Bread and Kraft Singles sandwich, but the grown ups may gravitate towards something like a ham and gouda, or the “Forbidden Dimension,” with its provolone, marinara sauce, and mozzarella sticks.
Things get a little fun on the menu not only with the food but in the names: Many sandwiches are named after Calgary’s beloved musicians and bands. Yep, there’s a Jann Arden, a Chixdiggit, and so on. (Suddenly that aforementioned Forbidden Dimension sandwich’s moniker makes a lot more sense, yeah?)
Of course you can get tomato soup, aka grilled cheese’s famous sidekick so brilliant for dunking and perfect for a chilly day. But you may want to further indulge in one of Grate & Barrel’s pie milkshakes, which are pretty much what it sounds like: pie blended into a milkshake. Yes, please!
