Retirement job? Mark Giordano announces new TSN gig

After a lengthy wait in hopes of getting a contract, longtime NHL defenceman Mark Giordano is slowly transitioning into a media role with TSN.

The 1,148-game veteran has yet to officially retire from the NHL but was unable to sign a deal for the 2024-25 season. Perhaps now accepting that a deal isn’t coming his way, he’s starting to shift into a media role.

Giordano appeared on TSN 1050’s OverDrive yesterday afternoon. He discussed his career, his overall thoughts on the 2024-25 season to date, and much more. Perhaps the most interesting of all was when he revealed he would be joining TSN on March 7 to help cover the trade deadline.

“It’s kind of cool to be on the other side of it, to be honest,” Giordano said. “I think even being here today, always watching from TV and stuff, you get a different feel of how everything works. [The deadline], from what I’ve heard from everyone here, will be a little more chaotic.

“It’s going to be cool. I just want to give a little bit of my experiences and insight into what goes on on that day from a player’s point of view… I think it’ll be a fun day. Have a lot of familiar faces around here that I know, starting off with [Jamie McLennan] and [Jeff O’Neill]. We’ll go from there and see how it is, I just want to try it out.”

Giordano, who was undrafted, spent the first 949 games of his career with the Flames, during which time he racked up 143 goals and 509 points while also winning the Norris Trophy in 2018-19.

The 41-year-old then spent a brief period with the Seattle Kraken before going on to play the final 144 games of his career with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
