Alberta town tapped as a top destination in Canada for Gen Z to visit this fall
Fall is a wonderful time to travel anywhere in Canada, and one town in Alberta was just named a top destination for Gen Z visitors.
According to data released by Airbnb, this fall, Canadians seem to be heading for the backroads. Searches for domestic stays are up 25 per cent year over year during the upcoming fall season, and fall is the top season for weekend getaway searches on the site.
The data also found that Gen Z is chasing the scenery when it comes to fall travel. Coastlines, escarpments, and foothills are pulling Gen Z travellers toward small towns that are near big scenery, with domestic fall searches among this group up nearly 40 per cent year-over-year.
One small town in Alberta has seen a big uptick in interest from Gen Z, as the foothills town of Cochrane was featured on the list.
Nestled on the edge of the Bow Valley, Airbnb points to Cochrane offering up panoramic Rockies views from Cochrane Hill, riverside trails through Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park, and a downtown institution in MacKay’s Ice Cream as reasons why Gen Z have shown interest in travel to the town.

The history of the founding of what is now Cochrane goes back to the late 1800s, when, in 1881, Senator Matthew Henry Cochrane established Cochrane Ranch, which later became the Town of Cochrane. The Canadian Pacific Railway granted the townsite in 1885, naming it in honour of Senator Cochrane. Despite the surrounding ranch population, few people called Cochrane home at this time.
By 1971, the population had grown to over 800 people, and Cochrane was incorporated as a town. The Town says that as of the 2024 municipal census, Cochrane’s population is officially recorded at 37,011.
Other spots that are catching Gen Z’s eye are Colwood, B.C.; Cape Breton, N.S.; and South Bruce Peninsula, Ont.
The methodology was based on Airbnb’s internal data on Canadian Gen Z travellers’ Q2 2026 searches for check-ins from Sept. 1 to Nov. 30, 2026, vs. Q2 2025 searches for check-ins from Sept. 2 to Dec. 1, 2025.
