9 free events to check out in Calgary June 2017

Here in Calgary there’s always something to do, but more often than not that something has a price tag attached.

Free things to do in our city are a little harder to find but they’re always out there. We’ve put together a list of six events to check out this month that are absolutely free.

Shakespeare by the Bow – As you like it

Starting at the end of this month, Shakespeare by the Bow will be putting on a production of As You Like It. This classic play about two young women who run away from their home of strict rules and classes for a life of freedom in the woods is wonderful way to spend your evening.

When: June 20 to August 27 at 7 pm

Stephen Avenue Farmers’ Market

Do you like local vendors selling fresh food, crafts and clothes but wish you could do all that in beautiful downtown Calgary? The Stephen Avenue Farmer’s Market is for you. With three blocks of Stephen Avenue showcasing up to 60 vendors, there’s bound to be something for you.

Where: 1 Street East to 2 Street West on Stephen Avenue

When: May 2 to September 5 from 11 am to 5 pm

Calgary Night Market back for summer fun in 2017

Night markets are a sure sign that summer is here, and the Calgary Night Market is coming back this month! Hosting ethnic foods, local vendors, and live music, this will be a great way to finish off a day of summer fun.

Where: Southcentre Mall parking lot

When: June 2 to 3, June 30 to July 1, July 28 to 29, August 25 to 26 from 5 pm to 11 pm

Inglewood Night Market

Another great night market happening in our city, the Inglewood Night Market will host vintage clothes, antiques, and handmade goods along with the usual food vendors and musical acts.

Where: 9 Avenue and 10 Street

When: June 9, July 14, August 11, September 8

Lilac Festival

This spring festival packs all kinds of fun and entertainment into a single day. Completely free and appropriate for all ages, the event starts with a parade down 4th street SW. After the parade, the neighbourhood of Mission hosts hundreds of vendors at a street market, where there will be street performers and musicians as well. Six stages will also play host to over 30 musical performances. Did we mention all this is free?

Bridgeland Cultural Festival

If you can’t make it to the Lilac Festival, or if you’re keen to attend more awesome events, head out to Bridgeland Cultura Fest. This will be the event’s third year and will offer opportunities to shop from local vendors, enjoy great food and listen to live music. This festival in particular is all about celebrating the history, diversity and culture of the Bridgeland neighbourhood, one of the oldest in the city.

Super Dad Lounge

After the success and fun of the similar Mother’s Day event earlier this year, the Calgary Farmer’s Market is putting on a free event in celebration of Dad. The Super Dad Lounge is going to include a variety of free craft beer and meat samples, exciting prices and giveaways, and massages from Mount Royal University massage students.

Enjoy Calgarian multiculturalism in the heart of downtown with this highlight of our city’s Latin American community. Latin American culture will be on display from warning to night with dancing, music, food vendors and more.

When: June 21-23 from 11 am to 11 pm

Al Azhar Shriners Vintage Car Club “Show and Shrine”

Nothing quite says “summer” like classic cars. The Al Azhar Shiners Vintage Car Club will be putting on a display of classic cars at the Century Downs Racetrack and Casino. This event is going to include giveaways, prizes, and music. It will be free to attend, and it only costs $15 to register your car to be featured in the show.
