Summer’s basically over, and our bank accounts are exhausted. With all those patio drinks, weekend trips, and nights out on the town, we don’t blame you if you’re in serious savings mode as we head into fall.
Luckily enough for you, there are still plenty of great events to check out that don’t cost a penny to attend. Here are a few of them over for September 2018.

BBQ on the Bow
What: Featuring many teams of BBQ Competitors, along with cooking demonstrations, kids activities, a local marketplace, beer gardens and live music from many of Calgary’s top local bands.

Go hiking in the Rockies
What: It’s officially larch season (it’s a type of tree.) Grab your cameras and hiking gear and head up to the mountains. Spend the day reconnecting with nature in the great outdoors and enjoy the picturesque fall views from the top.

Take a float down the Bow River
What: This is a tradition most of us Calgarians look forward to doing at least once during the summer. Plus, it’s the ultimate refresher when stuck in a prairie heat wave.
Tips: Make sure that you have enough life jackets for your entire group, book your raft ahead of time, park a vehicle at the beginning and the end of your route, and check weather advisories before heading out.

Terry Fox Run
What: Walk, run, or ride 1 km, 5 km, or 10 km as you join the community in commemorating the life of Canadian Hero, Terry Fox, and raise money for cancer research.

Fiesta Filipino 2018
What: Kick it Filipino style! A fiesta is meant to be a special time with friends with delicious food, fellowship and various activities. Join them for their fourth consecutive year and be a part of one of the largest fiestas in Alberta.

Doors Open YYC
What: Calgary businesses are opening their doors to the general public for the seventh year in a row as Doors Open YYC returns for 2018. The event allows Calgarians to play tourist in their own city for free as local businesses let the public take a look at what goes on in their operations.

Canada-India International Expo 2018
What: Explore trade and business opportunities with Canada and North America while meeting leading Canadian Business and Government Agencies.

Inglewood Brewery Flats: Oktoberfest
What: Enjoy live music, shopping at the Inglewood Night Market, and chilled beer from all your favourite Inglewood and Ramsey breweries. Come celebrate the end of an unreal summer at this Oktoberfest.

Jill Paddock Art Exhibition
What: You might recognize her colourful works from the walls of many local Calgary businesses. On Friday, August 24 Jill Paddock kicked off her very first solo art show. Throughout the month you’ll be able to purchase unframed art, notebooks, t-shirts, and even a few minimal nude art pieces that she’s so well known for. Come down and celebrate her all month long as she kicks off this incredible milestone in her artistic career.

Free First Thursday
What: Explore the Glenbow at your leisure for FREE on the first Thursday of every month. They are launching some neat new exhibitions this month that you won’t want to miss out on.

Beakerhead
What: Everyone’s favourite interactive art show is back for another year of exciting scientific fun – expect electric bolts to light up the sky (we aren’t kidding!). Explore the city and visit the various sites that are interconnected with a common theme.

East Side Studio Crawl
What: Calling all art lovers, young and old. Join some of Calgary’s most talented creatives for the on the 14th annual Art Crawl. You’ll have the opportunity to discover five different galleries in Inglewood and Ramsey that feature over 80 different local artists. There will also be the opportunity to partake in demos while entering for your chance to win an original art piece made by one of the resident artists.
