From a comforting hot chocolate to beautifully prepared meals, here are our picks for terrific food events that are happening in and around Calgary during these cold winter months.

Calgary Food Events: Winter 2016

Alberta Brewers’ Dinner

  • What: Get to know five of Alberta’s newer breweries during a five-course dinner and beer pairing. You will also have a chance to meet and chat with brewers. Try out beers from the Dandy Brewing Company, Blindman Brewing, Troubled Monk Brewing, Six Corners Brew Works, and Bench Creek Brewing.

Calgary Whisky Festival 2016

  • What: Presented by the MS Society of Canada, the Calgary Whisky Festival, which boasts Brand Ambassadors and whisky sampling stations, benefits the MS Society of Canada – Calgary & Area Chapter.
  • When: Thursday, January 14. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
  • Where: Arts Commons (formerly known as the Epcor Centre) – 205 8th Avenue SE

Cook with Your Kids

  • What: Learn basic cooking skills while spending time together making healthy meals. One parent can register with up to two children. This month’s class is on how to make Beef Stew.
  • Where: Calgary Farmers’ Market – 510 77th Avenue SE
  • When: Saturday, Jan 16 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
  • Cost: $40 for one parent an child and $10 for an additional child

Beer and Cheese Pairing

  • What: This event will teach you the art of pairing beer with cheese. Join the Craft Cellars certified beer specialist and sample a variety of beers and cheese.

A Taste of India

  • What: Learn great Indian food recipes, and how to make them from scratch. During the class you will prepare a multi-course meal including garam masala, vegetable and spice raita, tofu butter masala, and more.

Wartime Beer and Bingo

  • What: Enjoy local beer and playing the old-time classic game of Bingo, just like the Canadian Women’s Army Corps did during their downtime.

Soup for Syrians

  • What: This three-day soup-a-thon is set to provide over 5,000 servings of soup for the Syrian families arriving in Calgary. Help welcome our new friends by making them a warm meal.

Cheese 101: Beyond the Basics

  • What: Taking you beyond Cheddar and Mozzarella, this event will walk you through artisan counterparts and lesser-known cheese cousins.

The Brakemen Foundation 2nd Annual Celebrity Chef Showdown

  • What: Head chefs from the Brakemen Foundation will face each other during a live cooking competition, in support of Brown Bagging for Calgary’s kids.

YYC Hot Chocolate Fest

  • What: During February participating Calgary cafes and restaurants craft some of the best and unique Hot Chocolates to support Calgary Meals on Wheels.

Checkmate, My Sweet Valentine

  • What: Come enjoy as a Check Mate Dating Service client during this dinner theatre play and find out a surprise to someone’s “happily ever after” fairy tale.

Winefest Calgary

  • What: Presented by Sobeys Liquor and Safeway Wine & Spirits, Winefest is an all-inclusive event meaning that every sip and sample is included in the ticket price, allowing you to try before you buy. Wine experts are available during the event to educate and give suggestions.
  • Where: Stampede Park BMO Centre, Hall E
  • When: Friday, February 19 from 7 to 10 p.m., Saturday, February 20 from 2 to 5 p.m., and Saturday, February 20 from 7 to 10 p.m.

Fondue Class for Two

  • What: Janice of Janice Beaton Fine Cheese will be sharing her classic recipe plus two favourite twists on traditional Swill Fondue. You will get to try and taste all three recipes as well as drink some delicious wine.

The Big Taste Calgary

  • What: For 10 days, Calgary’s foodies will be downtown in celebration of world-class cuisine. Participating restaurants will be offering prix fixe menus, giving costumers the chance to try the best of each restaurant.

Battle French vs Quebec Cheese!

  • What: Watch a heated battle between cheese where two of Janice Beaton Fine cheese cheesemongers will choose their favorite regional representatives. During the event you will get to learn about and try the cheese from Quebec and France while drinking Quebec beer and French Cider.
