Flames' Weegar appears to be snubbed from Canada's 4 Nations roster

It doesn’t look as though the Calgary Flames will have any representatives playing for Team Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament.

While not officially confirmed, several insiders are believed to have pieced together the final roster for Team Canada, with one notable omission being Flames defenceman MacKenzie Weegar.

Weegar, who is coming off of a career season in which he scored 20 goals and 52 points, was a defenceman some believed would crack the highly talented roster. Instead, however, it appears as though he was edged out by other blue liners such as Colton Parayko and Travis Sanheim.

Some also believed Nazem Kadri may be in the running for a spot, though his slow start to the 2024-25 season did him no favours. This doesn’t mean that Flames fans won’t be able to watch any of their players in action at the best-on-best event, however.

Though they won’t have any representatives playing for USA or Finland, they could see a few playing for Team Sweden, whose roster will be released this afternoon.

Defenceman Rasmus Andersson, who has had a strong start to the season with six goals and 15 points, has a very good opportunity to make the team. Mikael Backlund’s chances aren’t as strong, though he has been placed on some projected rosters as Sweden’s fourth-line centre.

Despite all four rosters being officially announced today, the tournament is still a few months away. It’s set to start on February 12 and continue through February 20. Should any projected Canadian defencemen be injured, Weegar may be first in line as a replacement.

Weegar has admitted lately that he was very hopeful to earn a spot, though he’s also been adamant that he’s more focused on the Flames’ success. He’s done a great job of that to this point, as he’s had a huge role in their rather surprising 13-9-4 start to the season.
