Flames still have offer on the table for Hanifin: report

If Noah Hanifin wants to remain with the Calgary Flames, there’s an opportunity for him to do so.

It was reported by many that the Flames had made a long-term offer to Hanifin’s camp earlier in the season, though since nothing came of it, fans assumed he had turned it down. As it turns out, that may not be the case.

In a recent report by The Fourth Period, David Pagnotta wrote that Hanifin still has an eight-year, $60 million deal on the table. That said, it doesn’t sound as though he is eager to sign it at this time.

“With three big-name players on expiring deals, none of whom are that close to an extension — unless Noah Hanifin decides to sign his eight-year, $60 million extension still on the table — Conroy can’t afford to let them walk for nothing in the summer, and that factors into his teams building plans.”

There have been plenty of teams who are believed to be interested in Hanifin, with the New Jersey Devils near the top of the list. The 26-year-old would help bolster the blue line of any playoff calibre team, as he is an everyday top-four defenceman who is solid on both sides of the puck.

Hanifin, who carries a cap hit of $4.95 million, has seven goals and 23 points in 43 games on the season. He is also averaging 23:21 minutes of ice time per game, which ranks second amongst all Flames to only Rasmus Andersson.

While the Flames should have no problem receiving a big package in exchange for Hanifin, fans are still divided on whether or not general manager Craig Conroy should move him. With the Flames preferring to retool rather than enter a full rebuild, keeping a very good defenceman around who is just entering his prime years may wind up being the right decision.
