One of the biggest names in Canadian tennis is on a huge run — and climbing up the world rankings in the process.

Following his four-hour quarter-final win over Alex de Minaur at the US Open, Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime is well on his way to try to reclaim his former career-high ranking of No. 6 in the world.

Auger-Aliassime dropped his first set on Thursday, but ended up winning two tiebreaks to advance by a final score of 4-6, 7-6, 7-5, 7-6.

It is the second Grand Slam semi-final of the 25-year-old Montreal native’s career. In 2021, he faced off against Daniil Medvedev in the final four at the US Open, where he was the eventual champion.

“I tried to stay really calm. And honestly, I just believed that my level would come when I would need and that it would be able to step it up when I need to, and that as the match would go on, that I would get my I would get my rhythm and find some more precision,” Auger-Aliassime told TSN following the match. “It was a tough day, but super happy that I was able to get it.”

He’s been having quite the tough time in 2025 so far, failing to get out of the second round at any of the three previous Grand Slams and dropping to as low as No. 30 in the world rankings.

But Auger-Aliassime’s run in this tournament will see a big increase in his live ranking, pushing him up 14 spots from world No. 27 to at least No. 13. The move helps him reclaim his spot as the top Canadian men’s singles player.

Denis Shapovalov is ranked No. 26, while Gabriel Diallo is ranked No. 35.

On the women’s side, National Bank Open champion Victoria Mboko is ranked No. 23, ahead of Leylah Fernandez, ranked No. 28.

His big run at the US Open has helped earn back an outside shot to qualify for the ATP Finals in December in Turin. Currently, he’s No. 10 in the live race rankings for 2025, with the top eight seeds having a shot at winning the ATP Finals title.

Auger-Aliassime will take on the winner of Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti in a semi-final match on Friday. Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz are facing off in the other semi-final after wins on Tuesday.
