Correction: An earlier version of this article stated that the collision took place on Monday. It has since been corrected to state that the collision took place on Tuesday, February 4.

A young man died on Stoney Trail Tuesday morning after losing control of his vehicle and driving off the highway.

A release from the Calgary Police Service states that the 25-year-old man had been driving a grey Ford Focus eastbound between the exits of Deerfoot Trail and Harvest Hills Boulevard NE at around 7:15 am when he rolled into the north ditch.

His vehicle was stopped when it collided with the concrete base of an overhead highway sign, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, states the release.

Police believe that excessive speed may have been a factor in the crash.

Eastbound Stoney Trail was reopened by Tuesday afternoon following an investigation of the collision and a response from emergency crews.

Police are asking that anyone with information about the collision contact them at their Traffic Section number of 403-567-4000.
