Honestly, this altercation just looked wrong.
Two Flames teammates who anchored the team’s blueline at the start of the season didn’t appear to be enamoured with each other on Friday night.
Back in January, the Flames ended over a year of Rasmus Andersson trade speculation by dealing him to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for Zach Whitecloud, Abram Wiebe, and a 2026 first-round pick.
While that trade shocked no one, MacKenzie Weegar’s departure was a bit more surprising.
Shortly before the trade deadline, Weegar decided to waive his no-trade clause to facilitate a trade with the Utah Mammoth. It was a decision that even surprised Weegar’s wife.
The trade netted Calgary Olli Maata, Jonathan Castagna, and three second-round picks in return.
Flames fans should feel good about netting four decent draft picks and two prospects in return for the veteran defenceman. But that didn’t make Friday night’s altercation any less strange.
After playing on the same team for parts of four seasons in Calgary, Andersson and Weegar exchanged some light jabs with each other during the Mammoth’s 4-2 win over the Golden Knights on Friday.

Although it wasn’t a full-on fight, it was still strange to see.
And, most Flames fans appeared to be in Weegar’s corner.
“Fake tough guy Andersson is still scared to shed his mitts, he is an embarrassment,” one fan said.
“Get him Weegs, love to see it,” said another.
The altercation even had current Flames defenceman Zayne Parekh chiming in with a laugh on social media.
Although Andersson was the d-man who netted the Flames a first-rounder, Weegar has been the more effective of the two players in the postseason.
The 32-year-old has goals in back-to-back games for the Mammoth in the postseason, despite scoring just once in 19 regular-season games following the trade.
He got the party started during Utah’s first-ever playoff game last night, scoring the first of four unanswered goals for the Mammoth.

Andersson, on the other hand, has been pointless in three playoff games for Vegas.
It’s been a bit of a rough ride for the 29-year-old since joining Vegas. Andersson struggled, both offensively and defensively, for the Golden Knights following the trade. Although he did pick up his production with five goals and 10 points in the last 11 games of the regular season.
However, Andersson might need to factor into the scoring more for Vegas if they’re going to avoid a first-round upset against Weegar and the Mammoth.
