EI beneficiaries on the rise in Alberta: Statistics Canada

The upward trend in Employment Insurance beneficiaries continues in the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan, according to recent data from Statistics Canada

In Alberta, 62,500 people received EI benefits in December- up 2.2% from the previous month. That’s almost double the 31,200 beneficiaries from a year ago.

Comparing December to November there was an increase in EI beneficiaries of 2.7% in Calgary and a 3.2% increase in Edmonton.

Alberta had an increase in EI beneficiaries in almost all major categories. The largest increase occurred in management occupations at 6.8%

In December, there were 15,200 Saskatchewan EI beneficiaries, up 1.6% from November.

Declines were seen in Nova Scotia (-1.7%), Quebec (-1.7%), and Ontario (-1.1%). Other provinces had little change.

Nationally, the number of beneficiaries has had little change at 539,800 down 0.5% from the previous month. From a year-over-year basis the total number of EI beneficiaries in Canada was up 7.3%
