As recommended by health officials, if you choose to participate in events outside of your home, please adhere to COVID-19 health and safety measures, including proper physical distancing, mask-wearing, and frequent handwashing. If you are sick, please stay home.

East Village has reimagined what winter experiences can look like this year, bringing some unique new ideas to their urban neighbourhood – including a Scandinavian-inspired Hygge Hut, firepits, and cross-country skiing.

Cross-country skiing has become all the rage in Calgary this winter, with more people than ever looking for fun ways to fill their time and taking up new outdoor activities.

Born from this trend was the East Village Nordic Loop, a one-kilometre groomed cross-country ski track running beside Fort Calgary and the Bow River.

The problem with outdoor sports and winter in Calgary is that it’s often freezing outside, deterring many would-be athletes from participating.

East Village has remedied that by providing a contemporary, Scandinavian-style Hygge Hut and firepits for warming up near the Nordic Loop. These AHS-approved activations will reopen on Friday, February 5, for all to enjoy.

‘Hygge’ describes a quality of coziness and comfort that brings feelings of contentment or well-being, and that’s exactly what this hut aims to do – snuggle up, warm your hands by the fire, and watch the winter sun sparkle on the Bow River.

Hygge Hut is located east of the Simmons Building, just off RiverWalk Plaza, and the hut and firepits will be open and lit from 3 to 7 pm on Fridays and 1 to 7 pm Saturdays and Sundays. So whether you’re cross-country skiing, fat biking, or strolling along the river, make sure you take advantage of the hut, get cozy and warm up.
