Where to cut down your own Christmas tree in Calgary

Dec 19 2017, 10:50 am

Thought you could only venture off to cut down your own Christmas tree in fairy tales? I did too, but apparently, if you are properly licensed, you can go and cut your very own Christmas tree yourself. No jokes.

The following are places where you can legally cut your very own festive tree this holiday season:

Raven Ridge Tree Farm

Raven Ridge Tree Farm is there to remind everyone about the Christmas family tradition of going off into nature choosing your perfect Christmas tree and then heading home with the satisfaction of knowing you chopped it down yourself. Raven Ridge also offers precut trees so, if you just want to go out to see the farm and avoid all that extra work of felling your own fir, that’s also an option.

Location:
RR#3, Rocky Mountain House
Phone: 403-722-3207

Calgary Junior Forest Warden Society

This lot is manned from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. November 28 to December 20. If you want your tree to look extra full this year ask for a demo that will show you how to make two trees look like one full one. This lot is run by JFE club members and it is open depending on the weather conditions.

Location: Powder Face Trail
Info: $5 per tree (lodgepole Pine only, includes permit) and no more than three per person

Go into the Forest

Yes, you can literally go out in to the forest, on provincial Crown land, with a permit from Environment and Sustainable Resource Development and cut the tree of your dreams. The Alberta Environment and Parks site suggests that you drive a 4X4, because roads can be bad this time of year.

Location: Approved forested area
Info: Cut down your own tree after obtaining a $5 permit (good for 30 days after time of purchase)
