In a one-month span, the number of people saying they plan to be inoculated as soon as possible has increased 12 percentage points, with a firm majority (60%) now willing and waiting for the COVID-19 vaccine.

According to a recent study from the Angus Reid Institute, Canadians are “more confident than anxious about the prospect” of the COVID-19 vaccine. For the first time since the summer, a majority of respondents are ready to go under the needle.

Under a year ago, less than half of surveyed Canadians (46%) said they would be willing to get the vaccine during an Angus Reid Institute study from July 2020.

The Angus Reid Institute says the online survey — which studied 1,580 Canadians between January 7 and 10 — found men aged 55 and older are most impatient for the vaccine, with 63% saying they’ve been waiting “too long” for the vaccine.

Canadians who are willing to be vaccinated indicated they are prepared to receive the vaccination at a variety of venues, 90% of whom said they would get the shot from conventional places (such as medical clinics), 64% of whom would go to drive-through vaccination sites and 35% said they’d get vaccinated at shopping malls.

Though Canadians in most provinces are more willing to get vaccinated, Albertans were the only ones whose opinion didn’t change in the past month, along with Saskatchewan, where they are the least likely to want a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. One out of five respondents in each province are opposed to getting immunized at all — though national hesitation remains at a low 12%.

Respondents from both provinces were also the least hurried to get their shots.

Changes in opinion were most noticeable in Ontario, which saw the highest number of respondents looking to get their injections “as soon as possible” but only by a marginal percentage (8%).

Among Canadians willing to get vaccinated, 81% of respondents said they feel “completely confident” about receiving it, versus 19% who said they were feeling “anxious” about the shot.

Canada’s COVID-19 death toll is now 16,979, along with 663,627 total cases.
