7 things you can do this Canada Day that you don't know about

Canada Day is almost here and chances are you’re still trying to make plans.

Sure, you can go and watch firework displays on Saturday, July 1. But if you want to celebrate a little differently this year, you can.

There are a wide range of cool events taking place for Canada’s 150th birthday, and that means Calgarians’ most patriotic day is going to be a whole lot bigger and better than ever before.

To help you streamline your Canada Day plans, we’ve put together a list of seven events that you can attend next month. Exciting, eh?

East Village Street Fair

Crowd/East Village Street Fair

At this Canada Day fair you’ll be able to browse the wares of more than 80 artisan vendors. Non-profit organizations will be onsite promoting their mandates too. Local musicians will be providing the soundtracks for the day and you’ll catch some local performances plus a fancy car show, too.

When: July 1, 9 am to 4 pm
Where: East Village – between City Hall LRT station and Fort Calgary

Canada Day at King Eddy

Venture down to the historic King Edward hotel for an epic Canada Day party where admission is free. You’ll hear live music playing throughout the day featuring the likes of Amy Bishop, Flat Whites, Torchettes, Dragon, and more.

When: July 1, 12 to 6 pm
Where: King Edward Hotel – 438 9th Avenue

LEGO construction site at Central Library

Celebrate Canada Day by reliving your childhood and constructing your most imaginative LEGO building at the Central Library. When you’re finished, you can try your hand at chess against a chess master, or sit around a campfire with your family or friends to enjoy summer songs.

Canada Day in Downtown Calgary

Head downtown to Celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday in Calgary at the Stephen Avenue Stage. You’ll get to see a Canadian music experience with artists like Sugar Snap, The Corey Hotline, and Scotch Whiskey Limo performing hits that are guaranteed to get you on your feet dancing.

When: July 1, 11 am to 5 pm
Where: 100E block of Stephen Avenue, between 1st Street SE and Centre Street

Free Canada Day Pancake breakfast

Yes, seriously – you can celebrate Canada Day in Calgary with some free pancakes at Fort Calgary. You’ll get to enjoy live music, food trucks, and even a Canada Day photo booth. There will be a petting zoo for kids and a paddling race too.

When: July 1, 2017, 9 am to 5 pm

Canada Day Aboriginal showcase and powwow

Learn more about Indigenous culture this year for Canada Day at this event. You’ll enjoy a traditional powwow gathering of communities and informative programs being hosted in the cool setting of tipis and trapper tents. There will be a ton of cool performances throughout the day that you’ll want to see to make this Canada Day one to remember.

When: July 1, 10 am to 8:30 pm

Outdoor skateboarding competition with live music

Get down to live music venue Distortion and celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday with a daytime skateboarding competition in the parking lot. There will be live music performances, cold beer, and lots of skateboarding. You must be 18 years or older to enter the venue and if you’re skateboarding you could win a grand prize of $500.

When: July 1, 12 pm
