The Edmonton Oilers have inked Connor McDavid to a contract extension, and we now know the details of the deal.
Fans in Edmonton are celebrating after the Oilers captain announced his own extension on Monday morning. He has been the face of the franchise for a decade, but there started to be some serious concerns that this may be McDavid’s last season in Edmonton.
That will not be the case, as McDavid opted to pen to paper on a two-year bargain contract with a $12.5-million AAV. The contract includes a no-movement clause and with the vast majority of the money being paid out in the form of signing bonuses, per PuckPedia.
McDavid's 2 year $12.5M Cap Hit #LetsGoOilers deal is:
Year 1 $850K Base & $13.4M Signing Bonus
Year 2 $900K Base & $9.85M Signing BonusNo Move Clause

Leon Draisaitl’s $14-million AAV remains the highest cap hit on the Oilers.
This automatically becomes the biggest bargain contract in the entire NHL as he refused to take a cent over his current cap hit, despite being the league’s undisputed best player. It also goes to show that McDavid wasn’t interested in maximizing his earnings more than he was concerned about having a chance to win.
McDavid will be the fifth-highest paid player in the NHL when his new contract kicks in for the 2026-27 season, with Minnesota Wild forward Kirill Kaprizov leading the way at $17 million.
McDavid will be the 5th-highest paid player in the NHL next season:
1. Kaprizov ($17M)
2. Draisaitl ($14M)
3. Matthews ($13.25M)
4. MacKinnon ($12.6M)
5. McDavid ($12.5M)— Rob Williams (@RobTheHockeyGuy) October 6, 2025
The lower cap hit should allow the Oilers to more easily acquire talent over the next three seasons.
This will also quiet down all the noise that this contract saga has carried around the team. Now, the sole focus will be on the upcoming season and getting back to a third-straight Stanley Cup Final.
Oilers fans will no longer have to worry about the immediate future of McDavid. The task will now be passed to management to extend Edmonton’s window and ensure that another contract extension follows this one in the coming years.
For now, we can all start focusing on the hockey.
