An ugly start to the 2026-27 season doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to be excited about regarding the Calgary Flames.

Though it’s resulting in some obvious short-term pain, the Flames are slowly making progress in what has been a full-fledged rebuild. They’ve accumulated plenty of top-tier prospects who they hope will help eventually turn this team into a Stanley Cup contender.

The other very exciting aspect is the new building that’s coming to town.

This current season will mark the final one played out of the Saddledome, with the Flames set to move into Scotia Place for the 2027-28 campaign. As much as the iconic building will be missed, many Calgarians are chomping at the bit to start watching games at the new venue.

This new arena has several amenities, including an indoor public plaza, outdoor plazas that feature a massive viewing screen, and a three-level sports bar.

And that’s just the beginning of it.

Another great feature to come out of Scotia Place is its 1,000-seat community arena. This will serve as a practice facility for the Flames, but can also be rented out by the public.

On Wednesday, the City of Calgary shared some photos and video of the progress being made on the Esso community arena, along with some renderings of what fans can expect once completed.

In addition to hosting up to 1,000 fans, this arena features an NHL-sized ice surface, accessible seating and viewing areas, and universally accessible change rooms. It will also be adaptable for sledge hockey.

Scotia Place will serve as the home of the Calgary Wranglers and Calgary Hitmen as well. Both teams will have access to the community arena as a practice facility, meaning that the long treks to practice at WinSport will no longer be necessary.
