Road construction just west of Calgary is wrapping up after three years
After years of construction, temporary speed limits around the Highway 1A and Highway 22 interchange in Cochrane are being removed as construction wraps up.
According to the town’s website, construction speed limits of 50 km/h were replaced with permanent speed signage on Friday, July 17, 2026. The town says the permanent speed limits are generally the same as they were before construction began in Cochrane:
- 60 km/h through the main interchange site and junctions, on both Hwy 1A and Hwy 22
- 80 km/h further west on Hwy 1A (toward Heartland) and further north on Hwy 22 (toward Sunset Ridge)
- 50 km/h approaching downtown Cochrane

Construction on the Highway 1A/22 interchange project began in May 2023 and included expanding Highway 1A from two to four lanes west of Highway 22 to 6th Avenue and building two new bridges on Highway 1A over Big Hill Creek.
It also included replacing the Highway 22 CP Rail overpass over Highway 1A with a new larger overpass structure, and new interchange ramps and roundabouts connecting Highways 1A and 22 as part of the interchange.
While the main construction phase is wrapping up, some work will continue on the site. Final landscaping and deficiency work will take place throughout the rest of the month, and localized speed reductions to 50 km/h may be put in place during future lane closures or work near the roadway.
Construction zone ahead and construction zone ends signs will remain in place until all work is complete.
