Climate change activist Greta Thunberg is on her way to Alberta

Greta Thunberg is heading north.

The 16-year-old climate and environment activist from Sweden has announced her plans to travel to Alberta following “a few days of well needed rest while enjoying the spectacular nature of Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana,” according to a post on her Twitter account on October 12.

Thunberg has become a household name over the past year after her school strike for climate saw momentum the world over, with an estimated 6 to 7.6 million people participating in the 2019 event.

Her speeches the UN Climate Change COP24 Conference in 2018 and at the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit in New York have drawn the eyes of millions of viewers, in which she delivers blunt, impassioned words about the impending fate of the Earth as we know it.

“‘We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth — how dare you!” she said in New York.

Now Thunberg is heading to Canada’s oil and gas centre, Alberta, which a 2018 survey found to be more opposed to the fact that the global temperature is rising than any other Canadian province.

Unsurprising, the trip’s announcement has been met with mixed responses, with everything from warm welcomes to dire warnings.

One of the online responses was from Calgary city councillor Diane ColleyUrquhart, who invited the activist to address city council if she found herself in YYC.

“Greta we are delighted you are coming to Alberta. Please come to Calgary! We will recognize you in Council Chambers and have you address us. Maybe you can speak at our Climate Change Symposium if your sked permits. It would be great for you to examine our City of Calgary Plan.”

When Thunberg will be arriving in Alberta and where she will be travelling to has not yet been specified.
