City of Calgary implements new recycling program at work

Nov 2 2016, 5:55 am

The City of Calgary wants you to know that it’s time to recycle at work like you do at home.

“Calgary businesses and organizations produce one third of all the waste going to City landfills,” said waste diversion specialist with Waste & Recycling Services at The City of Calgary, Leanne Michie in a release.

“More than half of waste from businesses is not actually garbage – it is paper, cardboard and other materials that can be recycled instead.”

Starting Monday, November 1 changes to the Waste & Recycling Bylaw will require businesses and organizations to recycle:

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Glass
  • Plastic film and containers
  • Food cans
  • Foil
  • Scrap metal
  • Untreated wood

The bylaw applies to all businesses and organizations, including property management companies, offices, stores, malls, schools, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, manufacturers, factories, non-profit organizations, places of worship and warehouses.

To find a directory of recyclers that service businesses and organizations, you can check Green Calgary at greencalgary.org/recycler-directory.
