Calgary to start accepting cannabis store applications next week

If you’re hoping to run your own little cannabis shop sometime down the line, you’ll likely want to send in your application to the city starting next Tuesday.

In the lead up to federal legalization, the City of Calgary has been getting their bylaws in order to streamline the process of buying, selling, and consuming the product.

Starting on Tuesday, April 24, prospective cannabis store owners will be able to apply for the necessary permits allowing for ownership and operation of their future stores once legalization comes into effect.

“The city will start accepting applications for cannabis retail stores on Tuesday,” said Brandy MacInnis, Senior Special Projects Officer, in a release from the City.

“But no decisions on these applications will be made until the date of cannabis legalization is known.”

Applications will be able to be filled out either in person at the Calgary Municipal Building (800 Macleod Trail SE) or by going to the city’s cannabis section on their website.

“We are encouraging businesses to use the online application; city staff will be assisting in-person applicants as quickly as possible, but there are physical constraints,” said MacInnis in the release.

If you are unable to file the application online for whatever reason, you’ll need to go to the third floor of the Calgary Municipal Building, which opens at 8 am, starting Tuesday.

According to the release, applications will be reviewed in the order they’re received – so sooner is definitely better than later.
