Vicky Mboko’s meteoric rise in the world of tennis has continued with her first-ever WTA title.
The 18-year-old Canadian did it on home soil, upsetting Naomi Osaka in the final of the National Bank Open in Montreal. Mboko won the thrilling three-set match (2-6, 6-4, 6-1) to become just the second Canadian woman to win this tournament in 56 years. Bianca Andreescu was the last Canadian to do it in 2019.
Just like she did in the semi-final, Mboko battled back after losing the first set. The match turned early on in the second set, as Mboko appeared to frustrate Osaka, breaking her serve on multiple occasions.

“When I was younger, these kinds of achievements seemed so far away. I would never known it would come so [soon],” said Mboko in a post-match interview with Sportsnet’s Danielle Michaud. “Oh my god, I’m getting so emotional right now.”
Mboko entered this tournament as the 85th-ranked player in the world, but she is skyrocketing up the WTA rankings. The Toronto product will be ranked 25th when the rankings are updated next, meaning she’ll be a seeded player at the US Open.
Not bad for a player who was ranked 350th in the world coming into 2025.
The teenage tennis sensation became the second youngest player to beat four former Grand Slam winners in a single tournament, as she upset Sofia Kenin, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina, in addition to Osaka, en route to the championship. Only Serena Williams has accomplished that feat at a younger age.
