Many Canadian moms will foot their own bill this Mother's Day: survey

Mother’s Day should be about pampering the moms in your life, but not all families are getting the message. A new survey from Retail Me Not suggests 33% of Canadian moms will spend an average of $170 on themselves this Mother’s Day.

That means some moms will outspend their loved ones by about $10. Yikes.

Overall, 38% of Canadians say their moms will pay for part of her own Mother’s Day celebration – and that number jumps to 67% for moms of young children.

So what exactly is mom spending money on for herself this Mother’s Day? Experiences. According to the survey, moms who spend on themselves want to create memories through dining out (28%) versus a quiet night in (21%). And if you’re thinking about buying her jewelry or kitchenware, think again – only 4% and 1% of moms respectively would appreciate it.

“Moms are looking to make memories on Mother’s Day, rather than receive material gifts, yet it’s often those experiences that can be the most costly, with the average person spending around $80 on a single dinner with Mom,” says Kristen Larrea, spokesperson for Retail Me Not. “While planning that special dinner out, look into restaurants offering Mother’s Day specials or do a quick coupon search – that way you can enjoy time with mom without breaking the bank.”

Beyond that, less than 40% of Canadians even ask their moms what they want.

So what’s the moral of the story here? Canadians need to step up their Mother’s Day game this year. Seriously.
