A Canadian teenager has become an overnight sensation after a miraculous upset at the National Bank Open.
18-year-old Victoria Mboko captured the attention of the tennis world on Saturday, dispatching the NBO top seed and world number two, American Coco Gauff, in straight sets.
It was the biggest win of her young career, and she did it on home soil in Montreal.

Mboko was initially born in North Carolina, but her family eventually settled in Toronto when she was young. She represents Canada in tennis and was a relative unknown going into the year.
She ranked 350th in the world at the start of 2025, but quickly found a way to fly up the WTA rankings. Coming into the NBO, Mboko sat at 85th, but after advancing to her first-ever WTA 1000 quarterfinal,Ā she now sits at 55th in the unofficial live rankings.Ā
Mboko is now the second-highest-ranked Canadian woman, behind only the 25th-ranked Leylah Fernandez, who bowed out in the NBO round of 126.
Defeating Gauff is no small feat for Mboko, and it represents her first victory over a top-10-ranked player. It’s sure to be an emotional time for the teenager, but she won’t have much time to bask in the big win.
She is set to play in a quarterfinal match on Monday against Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maniero, who currently ranks 43rd in the world.
It’s been a whirlwind for Mboko, and she has a chance to continue her hot streak in front of a Canadian crowd.
