Canada ranked the most accepting country for migrants in 2019: study
A new study has found Canada to be the most accepting country in the world for migrants in 2019.
The result was drawn from Gallup, a global analytics and advice firm, who released its second-ever Migrant Acceptance Index on Wednesday. During the first index, Gallup surveyed 140 countries in 2016 and 2017; they asked the same questions to 145 countries for 2019.
“The questions ask whether people think migrants living in their country, becoming their neighbours and marrying into their families are good things or bad things,” says Gallup in a release.
A score out of nine is then given based on the sum of the points across three questions. Higher scores mean that the population is more accepting of migrants.
Canada scored an 8.46 out of nine points followed by Iceland (8.41 out of nine) and New Zealand (8.32 out of nine).
The United States was also included as one of the top 10 most accepting countries, placing sixth with a score of 7.95 out of nine.

“In Canada, residents almost universally saw migrants living in their country (94%) and being in their neighbourhoods (95%) as good things,” Gallup writes. “More than nine in 10 (91%) said a migrant marrying into their family would be a good thing.”
The study also suggests that responses from Canadians varied based on their political alignment and approval with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Gallup notes that migration policies have “taken different paths” since Trudeau became prime minister. The index found that those who approved of Trudeau’s job performance scored an average of 8.73 on the index, while those who disapproved scored an average of 8.21.
“Residents… particularly in Canada, are accepting of the migrants who will continue to play a huge role in shaping their country’s future.”
