Canadians abroad need to come home.

That’s the message Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is stating as travel restriction tighten on Canada’s border, with the prime minister announcing on Monday that only Canadian citizens, permanent residents, air crews, and US citizens will be allowed into the country.

Trudeau made a new announcement on Tuesday morning to update the country on the government’s response to coronavirus, stating that a $5,000 emergency loan will be made available through Global Affairs Canada for those who need it in order to get home.

“It will help people who need immediate financial assistance to return home or to cover their needs if they have to wait to get back,” Trudeau said at the Tuesday press conference.

He also noted that Canadians abroad in need of emergency assistance can call 1-613-996-8885 or email [email protected].

Canada has seen a total of 440 confirmed or probable cases in the country as of the morning of March 17, resulting in four deaths.

Starting Wednesday, most international flights will only be allowed to land at four major airports:

  • Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)
  • Montreal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL)
  • Vancouver International Airport (YVR)
  • Calgary International Airport (YYC)

Trudeau also said on Monday that border guards will have arrivals will out forms regarding possible symptoms, and anyone coming into the country is being asked to self-isolate for 14 days to ensure they do not have coronavirus.

And if you’re not feeling well, they recommend staying home at this time. Also, due to unexpected cancellations, please check the event you plan to attend is still taking place.
