Canada's 2017 Best Workplaces for Women includes major restaurant chains

Daily Hive Staff Mar 06, 2017 6:24 am 3,360

With International Women’s Day on March 8, the timing is right for an exploration of some of Canada’s top employers for women, and Vancouver-based JOEY Restaurant Group is among the top 50.

The rankings come via an independent analysis by Great Place to Work Canada, and takes a look at leading national employers in terms of how many women are in the worforce, as well as at least a 90% positive response to the statement “I am treated fairly regardless of my gender.”

There’s often a sense that the restaurant business is a “boys’ club,” favouring men in the kitchen and in managerial roles, however the growing JOEY company readily points out “52% of women are in management positions with women playing a leading role in all aspects of [the] business,” per a media release.

“This is not only a day to recognize all the great women that make up our organization but an opportunity to illustrate the diverse careers you can have working for a progressive restaurant group,” said JOEY’s Leah Whitworth, Regional Manager for the Lower Mainland.

“Many people have pre-conceived notions about restaurant ‘jobs’ and what a career looks like. There’s a whole world of opportunity that exists depending on your interests and skill set.”

Congratulations to our very own Caroline Smart for being awarded the Canadian Contributor of the Year Award! #WFFConf15

The 2017 Best Workplaces for Women ranks JOEY at position 46 on a list that includes nutritional supplement powerhouse Vega (#1), Kicking Horse Coffee (#10), and Yum! restaurants (#20).

It’s another Vancouver-born restaurant chain, Cactus Club, that rounds out the top 50 list.
