A formal music district has opened in Calgary, it stretchs from the Blues Can in Inglewood to the new Studio Bell being built in the East Village.

Coined as Music Mile, the stretch of entertainment will feature live music venues from Inglewood through the East Village. It’s kicked off this Friday with “One Night Stand.”

Venues along the mile include Ironwood Stage & Grill, Lolita Lounge, Festival Hall, Gravity Espresso and Wine Bar as well as other spots.

The concept was planned by a non-profit collective called the Music Mile Society. The organization was inspired by Mayor Neheed Nenshi who challenged Calgarians to find ways to improve the city in 2011.

Organizers hope Music Mile will become the hub for Calgary’s musical talent, giving residents a reason to go out and connect with others.

Calgary will also host the Canadian music awards Junofest in April.
